Collinson's spur of the moment venture while having a drink at a Sydney hotel led him the next day bound for Java and subsequently the Solomons and Nauru then the return trip to London. The author was a planter and trader in the Solomons between the wars. Viking 1987 or.cl. d/w. cr.4to. pp.XII.318. In the early 1930s, a team of Australians ventured into the unexplored highlands of New Guinea looking for gold. They found more than a million tribespeople who never had experienced contact with the outside world. One of the prospectors, Michael Leahy, recorded the confrontation between 20th century and Stone Age cultures in photographs and film footage. This documentary evidence was forgotten for 50 years, until filmmakers Connolly and Anderson came across it and set out to interview Leahy's brothers and others on the prospecting expeditions and tribesmen and women.
