already feel some interest, never mind how slight, in my writings and,
hence, in me. I cannot pretend that it is a self-sufficient,
self-explanatory artwork. It is just a lot of bits and pieces,
fragments of an autobiography which tells itself indirectly, by means
of exhibits-exhibit A, exhibit B, and so forth; dug up for display in a
museum (if you wish to study the past) or a courtroom (if you hope to
convict the author of hitherto unpunished crimes). "If I am in a
museum, I am beyond excuses; the past does not have to excuse itself.
If I am in a courtroom, it is the business of someone else to defend
me. So I will try hard to avoid self-excuse, as distinct from critical
comment, in my notes on this material. "Exhibits should not be tampered
with, I have made very few cuts, all of which are acknowledged, and
done absolutely no rewriting. " d/w. price clipped. Fine.
