44. ROBERTSON JILL  MacRobertson, The Chocolate King  illus. with 18  full page plates t/out. pub. Melbourne Lothian 2004  or.cl. d/w. 8vo. pp.256. At the peak of his brilliant career in the 1920s Macpherson Robertson paid more in taxes than any other Australian. An international traveller feted by the world's rich and powerful, Robertson was also a hero to his three thousand employees, who would line the streets of Fitzroy and cheer when he returned home from his travels. Yet, forty years earlier, this man had endured sickness and brutal poverty working punishing hours to make a meagre living. His private generosity to those who had fallen on hard times was legendary his personal charm all conquering. Yet he was also a bitter opponent of labour unions and a shameless self promoter who quite likely bought himself a knighthood by financing Douglas Mawson's 1929 and 1930 Antarctic expeditions. His private life was a mass of contradictions as well. Portrayed in the media as a traditional family patriarch, Robertson also maintained a 35 year relationship with a mistress who bore him two children.  Fine copy.   Price: $75.00
