Clarke was an outstanding example of that nineteenth century phenomenon, the clergyman-geologist, as much attached to his hammer as to his bible. When he arrived in Sydney in 1839, still sickly from the voyage, the ship's, captain thought to revive him with a little therapeutic geology and rowed him to Pinchgut Island, where he left him chopping feebly at sandstone.
