frontis. & plates t/out. some full page pub. Uni. of Qld. Press 1978 or.cl. d/w. 8vo.
pp.XVI.342. During the nineteenth and early-twentieth centuries, the South Pacific was one of
the most successful areas of Christian missionary activity: almost every major branch of
European Christianity was represented there, including the Church of England - the national
church of the most powerful country in the world. In God's Gentlemen, David Hilliard examines
the process by which the Melanesian Missionary brought Anglican Christianity to the Melanesian
islands of the south-west Pacific. From the first Anglican missionary voyage in 1849 to the
outbreak of the Pacific war in 1942, the Melanesian Mission was the sole continuous agency of
Western contact with the people of the northern New Hebrides and Solomon Islands. Fine copy.
